If you own a Ford Explorer SUV, make sure you know the details of the latest recalls. If Ford hasn’t already contacted you, this news is something you must be aware of.

What’s happened? Well, Ford recently issued three safety recalls that affect vehicles supplied in North America. It’s estimated that the manufacturer will recall around 1.3 million vehicles, 1.2 million of which are Explorer SUV’s listed from 2011 to 2017.

Mike Patton Ford can answer any questions you have, but first – what’s going on?

What’s the Problem?

Ford identified a twofold problem stemming from the rear suspension toe link. The main issue is that, if the suspension moves around too much (say, through excessive jouncing and rebounding) the rear suspension toe link might fail.

If this link fails, the steering control falters. Essentially, the problem increases the risk of a vehicle crash.

Is My Ford Explorer SUV Affected?

It’s unclear how many Ford Explorer SUV’s this problem affects. What we do know is that an SUV driver reportedly ran into a curb when their rear toe link fractured, but Ford isn’t aware of any injuries. At the moment, the recall seems to be a sensible precautionary measure.

You’re affected by this recall news if:

  • The Chicago Assembly Plant produced your SUV
  • The Plant produced your SUV between May 17, 2010 and January 25, 2017

So, the affected license plates date from 2011. Although most affected vehicles are registered in the US, around 28,000 are registered in Canada, and 1 is in Mexico.

Unsure if you’re affected or not? Don’t worry, Mike Patton Ford can quickly check this out for you.

What Happens Now?

The good news is that Ford knows how to fix this problem. In even better news, it’s a fairly simple fix.

What will happen is that Ford will now replace the right and left toe links. The links maintain the weight distribution placed upon the tires. They’ll perform this service free of charge. Although it’s seemingly only the right toe link that’s affected, dealerships are replacing both.

Recalls for other models experiencing different issues are also active, including a recall for a transmission problem in 123,000 2013 F-150 Pickups. For more information, and to see if you’re affected by any recall, check out the official Ford notification or ask Mike Patton Ford
