First, let's review in layman's terms the difference between "regular" oil and synthetic oil. Regular oil is essentially mineral oil. Synthetic is basically the opposite - 100% synthetic molecules without any mineral refining.
The Purpose of Oil
Oil performs critical functions for your vehicle:
- Reduces of friction and wear
- Protects equipment
- Controls temperature
- Extends the life span, efficiency and reliability of engine components
The Benefits of Synthetic Oil
There are a number of advantages to having synthetic oil in your car or truck. Synthetic oil flows easier in cold weather and is highly resistant to viscosity breakdown. You also don't have to change your oil as frequently as when you have regular oil. Typically, with synthetic oil, you can go between 7,500 to 10,000 miles between oil changes compared to about 3,000 for regular oil.
Even though it costs more to to get a synthetic oil change, it does last longer and saves you money over the life of your car.
